Problem-Based Learning (PBL — the Medical/Professional Model)

Problem-Based Learning (in the Barrows / McMaster tradition) is a tutorial-based pedagogical approach in which small groups of learners are presented with an authentic, ill-structured professional problem and — through a structured cycle of activating prior knowledge, identifying learning issues, self-directed study, and group discussion — construct domain knowledge and clinical/professional reasoning skills with a tutor acting only as facilitator.
