6 steps: (1) A proportion says two ratios are equal: 3/4 = x/12. (2) To solve: CROSS-MULTIPLY. 3×12 = 4×x. (3) 36 = 4x. (4) Divide both sides: x = 9. (5) Check: 3/4 = 9/12 ✓ (both simplify to 3/4). (6) Another: 5/8 = 15/x. Cross-multiply: 5x = 120. x = 24. Always check by simplifying both fractions.
