5 steps: (1) HYPHEN (-): the short one. Joins compound words: 'well-known,' 'mother-in-law,' 'twenty-one,' 'self-confident.' (2) Hyphen rules: use with compound adjectives BEFORE a noun: 'a well-known author' but 'the author is well known.' Also with prefixes sometimes: 'ex-president,' 'self-aware.'
