Cards showing terms: 3x², 5x, -2x², 7, 4x, -1, x², 2x³. Sort them into groups of LIKE TERMS (same variable and same power). Groups: {3x², -2x², x²}, {5x, 4x}, {7, -1}, {2x³}. The student discovers: you can only combine terms with the SAME variable and exponent. This is the key to adding/subtracting
