At a Glance
- Time: 30-60 seconds
- Prep: None
- Group: Whole class
- Setting: Any
- Subjects: Universal
- Energy: High
Purpose
Rapidly check recall of factual information through synchronized verbal response, energizing the room while assessing whether students remember key facts.
How It Works
- Ask short-answer question (15 sec) - "What year was the Battle of Hastings?"
- Class responds in unison (5 sec) - Everyone calls out answer together: "1066!"
- Confirm and continue (10 sec) - Acknowledge correct answer; move to next question
What to Say
Opening: "Choral response time! I ask, you all answer together—loudly! What's the chemical symbol for water?" During: "Together on three: One, two, three!" [Class: "H2O!"] Closing: "Perfect! Your synchronized answers show everyone's tracking these facts."
Why It Works
Choral response creates accountability (everyone must participate), provides immediate feedback on factual knowledge, and energizes the room through collective vocalization.
Teacher Tip
Best for facts with single, short answers. Not suitable for open-ended questions or complex concepts. Use sparingly—loses effectiveness if overused.
Variations
Subjects: Historical dates, math facts, vocabulary definitions, scientific formulas, language conjugations • Ages: K-5: simple facts; 6-12: curriculum facts; College: terminology
Online
Everyone unmutes and responds together. Works surprisingly well—creates connection through shared vocal participation.
Troubleshooting
Some students mumble to hide not knowing: "I'm listening for specific voices—everyone participate fully!"
Extension
Speed round: Rapid-fire 5-10 choral responses in a row for energizing factual review.
