Self-Assessment Sticky Notes

Activity illustration

At a Glance

  • Time: 2-3 minutes
  • Prep: Minimal (prepare board categories)
  • Group: Individual
  • Setting: Any
  • Subjects: Universal
  • Energy: Medium

Purpose

Gather visual, semi-anonymous data on where students need help by having them place named sticky notes under topic areas written on board, helping teacher prioritize review based on student-identified needs.

How It Works

  1. Write categories on board (1 min) - List 4-6 key topics/skills from unit
  2. Students place sticky notes (90 sec) - Write name on sticky, place under area needing most help
  3. Teacher scans and plans (30 sec) - Note which areas have most stickies; prioritize those in review

What to Say

Opening: "I've listed 5 key topics from this unit. Write your name on a sticky note, then post it under the ONE area where you need the most help." During: "Just one sticky per person... Place it under your biggest challenge... Be honest—this determines what we review." Closing: "Most stickies are under 'graphing equations'—so that's what we'll focus on tomorrow. Thank you for showing me your needs."

Why It Works

Visual, public data (though semi-anonymous—names visible but not called out) helps students see they're not alone in struggles. Teacher gets clear priorities for review. Students have voice in pacing decisions.

Teacher Tip

Make it "semi-anonymous"—names on stickies but not read aloud. This balances accountability with reduced embarrassment. Students see their name among many under same topic.

Variations

Categories: Topic areas, skill levels, lesson sections, question types • Format: Physical sticky notes on board, digital pins on virtual board (Padlet/Jamboard) • Ages: K-5: picture labels; 6-12: text labels; College: complex competency areas

Online

Padlet or Jamboard. Students add virtual sticky notes with names to columns representing different topics.

Troubleshooting

Students don't know what they don't know: "If unsure, place sticky under topic where you got the lowest quiz score."

Extension

Form review groups based on sticky note patterns. Those with same needs work together on targeted practice.
