Time Management Tips

When You Have LESS Time Than Planned

Compression strategies:

  1. Skip the whole-class share - Do Think-Pair without the Share to whole class
  2. Reduce pair/group size - Switch from groups of 4 to pairs
  3. Cut rounds - If activity has 3 rounds, do 2 rounds instead
  4. Eliminate writing - Make it verbal instead of written
  5. Use signals - Hand signals replace verbal responses (faster)

Example:

  • Originally planned: 5-minute Think-Pair-Share with whole-class discussion
  • Compressed to 2 minutes: 30-second think, 90-second pair share, skip whole-class share

When You Have MORE Time Than Planned

Extension strategies:

  1. Add reflection - Follow up with "Why does this matter?"
  2. Add whole-class debrief - Share highlights from pair/group work
  3. Add complexity - "Now take it to the next level: [harder prompt]"
  4. Add production - "Create a visual representation of your thinking"
  5. Add cross-pollination - "Find another pair and compare ideas"

Example:

  • Originally planned: 2-minute Turn-and-Tell
  • Extended to 5 minutes: 2-minute partner share + 3-minute "share with a different partner and find one commonality"

The "Time Buffer" Rule

Always build a 1-2 minute buffer into your lesson plan.

Why: Activities almost always take longer than you think, especially the first time you use them.

How: If you have 45 minutes of class time, plan only 42-43 minutes of activities. Use the remaining 2-3 minutes as buffer for transitions, clarifications, or unexpected delays.

Quick-Selection Decision Tree

Use this flowchart to quickly find the right activity for your time constraint:

How much time do I have?

1 minute
→ Opening class? → Surprising Fact, Provocative Question, Brain Teaser
→ Closing class? → Exit Ticket, One-Sentence Summary
  → Mid-lesson reset? → Stand-and-Stretch, Breathing Break

2 minutes
  → Processing new info? → Turn-and-Tell, Think-Pair (no Share)
→ Quick practice? → Pair-Compare, Quick Partner Quiz
→ Brief assessment? → Misconception Check, Quick Quiz

3 minutes
→ Need discussion? → Think-Pair-Share (full), Numbered Heads
  → Need movement? → Four Corners, Line-Up
→ Need reflection? → 3-2-1, One Minute Paper

5 minutes
→ Deep collaboration? → Small Group Discussion, Jigsaw
→ Complex thinking? → Debate Prep, Case Analysis
→ Comprehensive check? → Error Analysis, Skills Demo
→ Full movement activity? → Gallery Walk, Scavenger Hunt
